The Android-based BlackBerry PRIV - A Union of Two Giants

Sleek, stylish and expectedly functional, the PRIV is the latest handset offering from the security-conscious tech company BlackBerry. Ultra-thin, ergonomic and beautifully tough, we couldn't help but like it. Here's why.

The PRIV is a secure smartphone that embraces the famous functionality of the Android OS with the proven productivity, security and privacy of the BlackBerry brand.

The 5.4-inch screen is a dual-curve OLED display that's more than easy on the eye. With a resolution of 2560x1440 and a pixel density of 540 PPI - that's four times the quality of a standard HDTV - it really does make for impressive viewing.

And true to BlackBerry form, a physical keyboard hasn't been forgotten. Sliding out from under the touchscreen, the well-sized keys allow for rapid and accurate word processing on the go. And when it's time to put work away, the virtual keyboard is ready to take over.

The PRIV has a full day of battery life too, which according to the specs will see you through 22.5 hours of mixed use between charges. A 32GB internal hard drive gives you plenty of storage space, and front-face speakers allow for music playback.

For the fashion-conscious debonair, the corporate adventurer and the active businessman is the 18MP camera rear-facing camera. Integrating camera technology certified by Schneider-Kreuznach®, the PRIV boasts DSLR features like optical image stabilisation, making it more than capable of capturing all that you need it to.

But the PRIV's strongest features are professional. Android's Google Play for Work means countless IT and corporate apps, and simple and secure integration with your enterprise environment, making the PRIV a powerful business tool like no other that I've used.

Arguably, much of BlackBerry's success has come from its focus of data security and user privacy, and this smartphone is no departure from that legacy. The PRIV offers a suite of smartphone security features, including BlackBerry's DTEK warning system that informs you any security risks as they occur and prompts easy steps to improve your privacy.

And above all, it just feels good. Maybe it's the PRIV's beautiful design, intelligent ease-of-use or swathe of features that make it such a sublime bridge between work and play.

Launching in Australia through Optus, the PRIV is available online now. This post was written in collaboration with BlackBerry. Click here to find out more about the BlackBerry PRIV.
